When you step inside The Sneyd Arms, you’re not just walking into a pub — you’re stepping into a piece of Keele’s rich history. Our story begins back in 1846, when The Sneyd Arms was built to replace a row of old cottages in the centre of the village. The pub was named after the Sneyd family, who had owned the Keele estate for more than 500 years and played a huge role in shaping the local area.
The Sneyds weren’t just landowners — they were central to village life. From farming and mining to helping establish what would later become Keele University, their influence is still felt today. In fact, much of the land where the university stands was once part of the Sneyd estate.
Over the years, The Sneyd Arms became more than just a place to eat and drink. It was where estate workers would gather after a hard day’s work, where locals came together to share news and celebrate milestones, and where travellers found a warm welcome. We’ve heard tales of the local gentry and visiting industrialists enjoying a pint here in the 19th century, and in the years since Keele University opened, many of its staff, students, and even famous visitors have found their way to our bar.
Today, The Sneyd Arms is proud to continue that tradition. We’re still at the heart of village life — a place where locals and visitors come together over a pint of real ale or a hearty meal. The pub is run by Kirsty and the team who are passionate about keeping that friendly, welcoming spirit alive. Whether you’re here for a quiet drink, a family gathering, or one of our events, we’re always glad to see you.
So next time you pop in, take a moment to look around. The walls of The Sneyd Arms have seen over 175 years of laughter, conversation, and community — and we’re proud to keep that story going.
Loved reading this! The Sneyd Arms sounds like the heart of Keele — proper mix of history, pints, and good vibes. Can’t wait to pop in for a drink and soak up some of that charm! 🍻
