The Sneyd Arms: A Proud Part of Keele’s Heritage
Nestled in the heart of Keele, The Sneyd Arms has been at the centre of village life since 1846. Built on the site of earlier cottages, it takes its name from the influential Sneyd family, who were stewards of the Keele estate for over five centuries. The Sneyds shaped the area through their work in agriculture, mining, and education — their legacy lives on in the very fabric of the village and Keele University, which now occupies much of their former land.
Originally a welcoming stop for estate workers, villagers, and travellers passing through, The Sneyd Arms has hosted its share of notable guests over the years. In the 19th century, it was a favourite watering hole for local gentry and visiting industrialists. There are stories of distinguished academics from the newly founded Keele University raising a glass here, and in more recent times, the pub has welcomed famous alumni and visitors to the university, including politicians and well-known authors.

Today, The Sneyd Arms remains a much-loved traditional pub at the heart of the community — known for its warm welcome, real ales, home-cooked food, and cosy atmosphere. Whether you’re joining us for a quiet pint, a family meal, or one of our lively events, you’re stepping into a place that’s steeped in history and full of character.

The pub is now proudly run by Kirsty and the team, who are passionate about keeping the spirit of The Sneyd Arms alive — offering genuine hospitality and making sure everyone who walks through the door feels like part of the family.
