Keele may be best known today for its university and charming village feel, but centuries ago, this quiet corner of Staffordshire played a small yet fascinating role in the story of one of the most famous orders of the medieval world — the Knights Templar.
Who Were the Knights Templar?
Founded in the early 12th century, the Knights Templar were a powerful military and religious order. They began as protectors of Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land but soon grew into a wealthy, influential organisation with lands and strongholds across Europe. The Templars became known for their bravery in battle, strict discipline, and the air of secrecy that surrounded their activities.
The Templars in Keele
Historical records show that the Knights Templar once held land in Keele during the 12th and 13th centuries. They established a preceptory — a local administrative centre — in the area. From here, the Templars managed their estates, gathered resources, and supported their missions in the Holy Land.
The land around Keele would have been valuable for farming and for generating income to fund the order’s military campaigns and charitable work. While the preceptory itself has long since disappeared, the legacy of the Templars in Keele lives on through local history and legend.
