Local Legends We Can’t Confirm (But Love Anyway)

Here at The Sneyd Arms, we’re no strangers to strange happenings. Over the years, our team — and even a few brave locals — have experienced some truly odd moments that make you stop and wonder: is someone (or something) still lingering around after hours?

A recent ghost night at The Sneyd Arms & The Knights Templar had guests feeling the chill — and not just from the cellar. 👻
A recent ghost night at The Sneyd Arms & The Knights Templar had guests feeling the chill — and not just from the cellar. 👻

We can’t say for certain what’s behind these spooky encounters… but we can say they’ve happened more than once. Here are some of the real, unexplained stories from inside our walls.

🔨 The Three Knocks from the Cellar

Several staff members have reported hearing three distinct knocks — not random bangs, but three sharp taps — coming from the cellar walls when no one else is down there. There’s no plumbing or machinery that would explain it, and the sound has happened more than once. As one staff member put it, “It’s like someone’s politely trying to get our attention… from the other side of the wall.”

🍺 Glasses Knocked Off Tables

We’ve had glasses suddenly slide or tip off tables with no one nearby and no visible cause. Once, during a quiet shift, a freshly cleaned pint glass sat at the end of one of the restaurant tables… until it launched itself off.

🚪 The Front Door with a Mind of Its Own

Our glass front door has a latch that’s usually solid and secure — but more than once, it's closed on its own. No breeze, no customer, no explanation. Just a creak as it swings shut by itself, leaving us wondering what caused it.

👴 The Silhouette Behind the Bar

One of the eeriest stories came from a staff member locking up one evening. They turned to check the bar area one last time — and saw the silhouette of an elderly man wearing braces, standing just behind the pumps. As soon as they blinked, he was gone. No one else was in the building.

No records exist of a man matching that description working at the pub, but more than one person has reported the same figure in the same spot.

🪟 Strange Goings-On Upstairs

The flat above the pub has had its fair share of unexplained activity too. Residents and staff living upstairs have heard footsteps at night, doors creaking open, and the occasional low murmur… when no one else is home.

So, Haunted? You Decide.

We’re not saying The Sneyd Arms is haunted… but we’re not exactly saying it isn’t. What we do know is that our little pub has stories — and they keep coming. Whether it’s a passing spirit, a trick of the light, or just the charm of an old building, we’ll raise a glass to the mystery.

If you’ve had your own eerie experience here, we’d love to hear it. Just maybe wait until after closing…

👉 Pop in, grab a pint, and see if anything unusual happens while you’re here.
